Deploying Monitoring with Lineage

Instantly monitor all upstream dependencies from any target asset.

Deploying monitoring can be accelerated with column level data lineage. Select any target asset (schema, table, column, or analytics object) and Bigeye will leverage lineage to help you apply monitoring on all upstream dependencies without needing to manually add monitoring to each upstream asset.

Benefits

Deploying monitoring according to column level dependencies provides several advantages.

  1. It enables rapid monitoring of entire pipelines upstream from a target asset. This is significantly faster than navigating to each upstream table and applying monitoring to them individually.
  2. It reduces infrastructure cost because it only applies monitoring to columns that require it in order to assure the health of the target asset. Non-necessary columns are not monitored, which reduces load on your data source.
  3. It reduces potential alert fatigue because non-necessary columns will not be able to trigger alerts at all.

Deploying Upstream Monitoring

Start by selecting a target asset on the graph, in this example a Tableau Dashboard called Critical dashboard.

Click Deploy metrics to dashboard in the top right corner of your screen.

Select which metric categories to apply to the upstream tables and columns. Selecting Autometrics will apply Bigeye's recommended set of basic monitoring we recommend for all situations.

Confirm the specific metric types that will be applied to any applicable upstream tables and columns.

Review the metrics that will be applied, confirm who the owner of the metrics will be (be default it is yourself), and whether to add these to any Collections.

Click Deploy to start enabling the metrics.

Finally you can see the lineage graph with all relevant tables and columns. Each node's indicator will change from gray to green as metrics are enabled for the first time.
